Early life and education
Dean Acheson was born in Middletown, Connecticut, on April 11, 1893. He studied at Yale University and Harvard Law School before beginning a career in law and public service.
Cold War foreign policy
As Secretary of State, Acheson helped define the U.S. containment strategy toward the Soviet Union. He played a major role in the Truman Doctrine, the Marshall Plan, and the formation of NATO. His work placed him at the centre of U.S. wartime and postwar foreign policy.
Later life and legacy
After leaving office in 1953, Acheson returned to private life but remained an influential foreign policy commentator. He died of a massive stroke on October 12, 1971. He is remembered as one of the key American statesmen of the Cold War era.
