Early life and political career
Stephen Lewis was born in Ottawa in 1937 and became active in the New Democratic Party. He led the Ontario NDP from 1970 to 1978 and served as leader of the Official Opposition, becoming one of the most prominent left-wing political figures in the province.
UN and HIV/AIDS advocacy
After leaving provincial politics, Lewis served as Canada’s ambassador to the United Nations in the 1980s. He later worked with UNICEF and became the UN Special Envoy for HIV/AIDS in Africa, focusing on humanitarian response and human rights advocacy.
The Stephen Lewis Foundation
In 2003, Lewis founded the Stephen Lewis Foundation to support community-based responses to HIV/AIDS in Africa. He also authored Race Against Time, based on his work on the crisis. The foundation remains active in grassroots support and advocacy.
