Early life and education

LeCun was born in Soisy-sous-Montmorency, France in 1960. He studied engineering and computer science in Paris, earning an engineering diploma from ESIEE Paris and a PhD in computer science from Université Pierre et Marie Curie.

Career and research contributions

He joined Bell Laboratories in 1988 and later became a department director at AT&T Laboratories. LeCun helped establish convolutional neural networks as a major approach in machine learning and computer vision, and co-created DjVu image compression and the Lush programming language. He currently serves as a Silver Professor at New York University and was Meta's chief AI scientist.

Recognition and impact
