Ryan White was born in Kokomo, Indiana, in 1971 and lived with hemophilia, a blood-clotting disorder. He contracted HIV from contaminated factor VIII blood treatment, used to manage his condition, and was diagnosed with AIDS at age 13 in 1984.

School discrimination and activism

After his diagnosis, White faced intense fear and stigma when he tried to return to school. His school barred him from attending classes, prompting a public legal fight led by his mother, Jeanne White Ginder. The case drew national media attention and turned White into a prominent voice against HIV/AIDS discrimination.

Death and lasting impact

Ryan White died on April 8, 1990, at age 18, just before his high school graduation. That year, the U.S. Congress passed the Ryan White Comprehensive AIDS Resources Emergency (CARE) Act in his honor. The act provides federal funding for HIV/AIDS care and support services, especially for low-income and uninsured individuals.
