Robert Maxwell was a Czechoslovak-born British publisher who built a vast media empire. After his death in 1991, investigators uncovered one of the largest pension frauds in British history.

Early life and media empire

Maxwell was born into a Jewish family in Czechoslovakia in 1923. He fled during the Second World War and later settled in Britain, where he founded Pergamon Press and gained control of the Mirror Group and other publishing interests. By the 1980s he was one of the most powerful media proprietors in the country.

Fraud and financial scandal

After Maxwell's death, investigators found that hundreds of millions of pounds had been diverted from company pension funds, particularly within the Mirror Group. Some estimates placed the total misappropriated sum above £1 billion. The scandal led to the collapse of his business empire and remains one of the largest corporate frauds in British history.

Death and legacy

Maxwell died at sea off the Canary Islands in November 1991. An inquest ruled accidental drowning with heart failure, but the circumstances remain disputed. His name is also tied to wartime allegations and intelligence links. He was the father of Ghislaine Maxwell, whose own later trial drew widespread attention.
