What it is

Petra was originally known to its inhabitants as Raqmu and was a major Nabataean city in antiquity. It is often called the Rose City because of the pinkish-red colour of the sandstone cliffs from which its buildings are carved. The site was rediscovered by European explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt in 1812.

Petra is located in Ma'an Governorate in southern Jordan. Its notable features include the Siq, the Treasury, the Monastery, and the Royal Tombs, all carved directly into sandstone cliffs. The city also had an engineered water management system that supported its trade and population.
