Pablo Escobar was a Colombian drug lord, politician, and founder of the Medellín Cartel. He became one of the most powerful cocaine traffickers in the world and was widely known as the "King of Cocaine."

Who was Pablo Escobar?

Born in Rionegro, Colombia, in 1949, Escobar rose from modest beginnings to lead the Medellín Cartel. He also served as a politician, but his criminal empire made him infamous globally. His wealth and influence were built on cocaine trafficking, and he became a symbol of narco-terrorism.

The Medellín Cartel

Escobar founded and led the Medellín Cartel from the 1970s to the early 1990s. The cartel dominated the international cocaine trade, using extreme violence, corruption, and terrorism to protect its operations. At its peak, it supplied most of the cocaine entering the United States.

Death and aftermath

Escobar was shot and killed on December 2, 1993, in Medellín during a confrontation with Colombian authorities, one day after his 44th birthday. His death ended a massive manhunt. After his death, his widow and children left Colombia and lived abroad under changed identities for safety.
