Osama bin Laden was a Saudi-born militant Islamist and the founder of al-Qaeda. He was responsible for the September 11, 2001 attacks and was killed by U.S. forces in 2011.

Early life

Bin Laden was born in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in 1957 into a wealthy construction family. His privileged upbringing preceded a radicalization that led him to become a central figure in global extremism.

Al-Qaeda and militancy

He founded al-Qaeda in 1988 and directed it until his death. The group planned and executed attacks against Western targets, most notably the September 11, 2001 attacks, as well as the 2000 USS Cole bombing.

Hiding and death

U.S. intelligence tracked him to a compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan. On May 2, 2011, during Operation Neptune Spear, U.S. forces raided the site and killed bin Laden. His body was buried at sea.
