Nora Bernard (1935–2007) was a Mi’kmaq activist from Millbrook First Nation in Nova Scotia. She is best known for her role in initiating the largest class-action lawsuit in Canadian history on behalf of residential school survivors.

Early life and activism

Nora Bernard was born on September 22, 1935, in Millbrook First Nation, Nova Scotia. She attended the Shubenacadie Indian Residential School as a child, and later became a prominent advocate for survivors. In 1987, she founded the Shubenacadie Indian Residential School Association to support fellow survivors.

Class-action lawsuit

Bernard helped initiate a class-action lawsuit against the Government of Canada on behalf of residential school survivors. It grew to involve about 79,000 survivors and led to a settlement of over C$5 billion in 2005, the largest class action in Canadian history.

Death and recognition

Bernard died in December 2007 after being attacked. In 2008, she was posthumously awarded the Order of Nova Scotia for her contributions to residential school survivors.
