Michael Rockefeller was an American collector, ethnographer, and member of the Rockefeller family.

Michael Rockefeller was an American collector and ethnographer from the prominent Rockefeller family. He disappeared in 1961 during an expedition in what is now South Papua, Indonesia, and was declared legally dead in 1964.

Early life and background

Michael Clark Rockefeller was born on May 18, 1938, to Nelson Rockefeller and Mary Todhunter Rockefeller. He graduated from Harvard College in 1960. He was the youngest son of Nelson Rockefeller, who later became Vice President of the United States.

Expedition and disappearance

In 1961, Rockefeller traveled to Dutch New Guinea to study and collect Asmat art and material culture. On November 19, 1961, his catamaran capsized off the south coast. He was never found, and search efforts recovered no physical proof of his death. The most common explanation is that he drowned while trying to swim to shore, though some accounts allege he reached land and was killed.

Aftermath and legacy

Rockefeller was legally declared dead in 1964. His disappearance remains widely discussed and has fueled public interest in Asmat art and the Rockefeller family's patronage of museum collections.
