Early life and ministry

Born in 1894 in Russian-occupied Poland, Kolbe entered the Conventual Franciscans and founded a large monastery and publishing apostolate called Niepokalanów. He was known for his devotion to the Virgin Mary and for spreading faith through print media.

Arrest and death at Auschwitz

During the German occupation of Poland, Kolbe was arrested and sent to Auschwitz. In 1941, he volunteered to die in place of another prisoner, Franciszek Gajowniczek. After two weeks of starvation, he was killed by a lethal injection of carbolic acid.

Canonization and veneration

Pope John Paul II canonized Kolbe on 10 October 1982, calling him a martyr of charity. His feast day is 14 August. He is venerated as patron saint of journalists, prisoners, families, people with addictions, and amateur radio operators.
