The popular image of a barefoot wanderer scattering apple seeds randomly is a simplification. Chapman was a deliberate businessman who managed nurseries across Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, West Virginia, and Ontario. The folklore grew after his death, blending fact with tall tales.

Death and legacy
