The breed was developed around 1890 by Karl Friedrich Louis Dobermann, a German tax collector and dog catcher who wanted a protective companion for his work. In North America, the breed is usually referred to as the Doberman Pinscher.

Dobermanns are sleek, powerful, short-coated dogs with a medium-to-large build. Common colours include black, blue, red, and fawn with rust markings. They are known for intelligence, loyalty, alertness, and fearlessness, making them excellent guard, police, military, and search-and-rescue dogs.

Health and lifespan

Breed guides commonly list an average lifespan of about 10 to 12 years. Known health concerns include dilated cardiomyopathy, von Willebrand disease, and colour dilution alopecia.
