Colossus was a set of British codebreaking computers developed during World War II to help decrypt messages encrypted with the German Lorenz cipher. It is widely regarded as the world’s first large-scale electronic digital computer.

Colossus was a specialized electronic digital computer built in 1943–1945 under wartime secrecy at Bletchley Park and the General Post Office Research Station. How it worked

Colossus processed intercepted teleprinter traffic by testing cipher-wheel settings and counting patterns that could reveal the Lorenz key. It was programmable via settings and switches, making it the first programmable electronic digital computer. The machine performed its tasks at high speed using electronic valves rather than electromechanical relays.
